Things are getting rather tough here. The politicians' evil intentions are coming into action in several regions. Unless we do something, the privatisation of public social care or education will become a reality. The end of this crisis is not to come hand in hand with a loss in quality of the public services, not to mention with privatisation, which is far more expensive, unfair and selfish. There are some hidden interests made to benefit only a minority as well as demolish a world-famous network at the same time. How about privatising the Parliament or the Senate? Why not politicians put their posts in hands of the private sector? So bad they do that we couldn’t be worse. When are they going to pay with their own properties for the money-waste, overambitious works like never-going-to-be-used airports?
Letter by a Neurologist of the Hospital de La Princesa, Madrid.
My dear journalists, let me address you to accuse publically the Consejería de Sanidad de la Comunidad de Madrid (city council division for public health of Madrid) of dismantling the Hospital de La Princesa de Madrid.
Firstly, we want to denounce:
1. Mr. Ignacio González has lied during his first public speech. He declared the existence of a planned schedule to “transform” our hospital into an elderly care home. The professionals who work there have been informed by the press. There is not such a plan: we ourselves are planning our patients’ treatment for the following months. Patients from all Spain come to get operated at the epilepsy unit, nationally famous.
2. On November 1st at 11.30 we visited the Consejería de Sanidad to speak with the health councillor after his speech to the press where he was to announce this “schedule”. Despite our request to health councillor Fernández-Lasquetty in order to know what to tell our patients, he refused to see us. He did not only ignore our request but also sent Mr. Antonio Brugueño, Hospital de Madrid manager, to talk to us so that the councillor could flee the premises.
3. Mr. Burgueño made clear he didn’t have a clue on how our hospital is going to disappear, what is going to happen with the 40 prestigious medicine specialties or with the university students coming from all over the country to learn at our hospital, some of them the best qualified in their faculties who had personally chosen this hospital as their internship placements. The solution we have been offered is plainly insulting: we are expected to hold daily meetings to discuss how our hospital is going to be dismantled. Our hospital is 100 years old and became world-wide famous for its hardworking thorough teamwork.
We declare it is not a political problem concerning either PP or PSOE or any other party. What it is really going on here is that a private company wishes to take over Madrid’s health service and make money out of it at the shadow of the financial crisis. This company has presented this idea to some politicians who must have considered it perfectly logical. This overpasses partisan policies: our health system is at stake. How is it possible that as soon as four years ago 6 new public hospitals were needed and now we, the professionals that cure our diseases, learnt by the press that there is at least one public hospital too many? Is the hospital going to become a place for the elderly only? Let me say something else about this: this hospital cannot be sold and bought for it is built on land the State donated for a hospital, so they disguise its dismantling by no calling it a geriatric hospital but a medical centre specialised in offering old people a “dignified death”, which we wouldn’t call so “dignified”.
Our hospital already offers specialised care not only for the elderly, but also to more 500,000 people, and I mean 40 real medical specialties.
I want to thank you all for listening to us. I was born inside a democratic system and I have eventually lost faith in politicians. Please feel please to quote my words. I am willing to be interviewed and make you contact other members of the hospital.
Yours faithfully, Álvaro.

No way. It has not arrived a crisis able to defeat us. Because we wait to confront the problems standing up, looking straight to them. Because we may bend but never snap. Because heavens will no collapse over our heads. Because the dreamer may be killed but not the dream. Because we fall and stand up again. Because the sun will come out tomorrow. Because we’ll always have Paris. Because we’ll sing under the rain. Because we’re salmons swimming upstream. Because there’s no shake mate so long as we have queens on the board. Because there are no too many stupid bosses but too little cups. Because, if the narrows blot out the sun, then we will fight in the shade. Because rich or poor I do what I want. Because nothing is sweeter than the first drink after one’s exams. Because my life is like a game of Monopoly: even penniless and fucked-up, I will tread on your street once and again. Because we will escape this “hard death”. Because Sinatra will keep on singing, because we will find the perfect cake and the perfect gin and tonic. Because we like enjoying ourselves. Because they can’t stop the spring. Because we may be jobless but never motionless. Because we won’t drawn in a glass of water. Because there are many suitcases to make and many dresses to remove. Because the sunny days are about to arrive. Because nobody will be able to make us surrender. Because, as the musicians of the Titanic, will won’t stop playing and dancing until the waters cover us all. Let’s seize 2013, my brave fellas, because we are born to die. (Thank you J. A.)
